Natural Cold Remedies

Welcomed or not, cold and flu season has struck again. It doesn't matter how many green juices, smoothies or colorful vegetables you eat, the little boogers {no pun intended} will hunt you down, find you and thrive off you're host. This might be the only time you want to be known as the world's WORST party host. The last thing you want is for those darn microorganisms and viruses to invite their friends to the party you're reluctantly hosting.

So, how can you close your doors and kick your guests out?

Homemade Tea

Nothing takes the place of a solid, nutritional foundation but I'm not here to give you yet another reason to eat healthy. Healthy or not, we are all capable of falling victim to these unwanted guests. So here's my twist on an old wive's concoction:

Directions:

  1. Boil water.
  2. Combine all ingredients in your favorite mug.
  3. Once water is boiled, pour in mug and stir.
  4. Let cool enough to sip.
  5. Repeat ALLLLLL day!

Ingredients:

  • 1 TBSP Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 TSP Raw Honey
  • 1/8 TSP Cayenne Pepper
  • 1/8 TSP Cinnamon
  • 1/8 Ground Ginger
  • 1/2 Lemon
  • 1 TSP Finely Shredded Fresh Ginger

Why apple cider vinegar? Those pesky little dudes in the back of your throat causing scratchiness, pain and soreness aren't big fans of the acidity of vinegar. Instead of gargling a shot, enjoy it in this surprisingly tasty warm beverage.

Why honey? Well, the list goes on and on and on, but it's antibacterial and soothing to a sore throat. And if anything else, it's the contributing factor to this drink actually being edible.

Why cayenne pepper? It provides detox support and aides in ridding the body of infection. Maybe we should double that serving.

Why cinnamon? Cinnamon has long been known for it's anti inflammatory effects. It's also loaded with antioxidants that will help your immune system kick our unwanted house guests out.

Why ginger? Mostly known for it's ability to combat nausea but it's also loaded with anti inflammatory properties. You don't want to skip this ingredient!

Why lemon? Lemon is loaded with vitamins and nutrients but is also the master of digestion and detoxification.

So, if you really needed the why behind WHY you should drink this, there you have it. But seriously, it's tasty. If you're weird like me, you might enjoy it even when you're not struggling to fight your invaders off.
